At first when I went into the segregation units to deliver library books, the inmates assumed I was a nurse and started yelling at me that they needed new prescriptions, had an ache, or other medical questions even though I was not dressed like a nurse.
As I was walking out of one section, I heard one inmate yell out loudly, “Who is she?” Another inmate yelled back, “That is Mary from the chapel. She treats us like human beings, not animals.” That brought tears to my eyes.
